"for every day a man fishes he adds a day to his life"

Welcome to Trout Flies by Phil... This web site has been on-line since 1998 and contains a plethora of information about fly fishing in Northern New Mexico watersheds. Read the information on the "About" page regarding the genesis of Trout Flies by Phil. Featured on this site are nine watersheds. If you want to know where to go, what to use, get directions, current weather, current stream flows, tips...read on...

This web site will continue to remain on-line but my focus will be to concentrate my efforts on my photography web site Exposure and f/stop. I will not be updating this site as much as I have in the past so if you see something that appears to be out of date or incorrect please let me know and I will fix it. I will still be going fishing of course, and I do intend to continue with my journal of fishing trips.

In my opinion, the hub of Northern New Mexico fly fishing is at the point shown in the Photo above. The view is looking north at the Rio Grande Gorge standing at the northern most boundary of the Jemez Mountains south of Taos, New Mexico off NM68. To the north is the Rio Grande/Red River Box, to the northwest is the Chama/Brazos, San Juan River and the Rio de Los Pinos, to the northeast is the Upper Red River and the Cimarron River. To the southwest of this point is the Lower Rio Grande and the Jemez Creek and to the southeast of this point is the Pecos River area.

I have fly fished these waters for many years and my experiences are reflected on these pages. I have also chronicled most of my fishing trips from 1998 until July 2008 in a Fishing Journal accessed from the Journal link in the menu above. I created a blog where fly fishing journal entries from July 2008 to the present are posted. The archives will remain on this web site. The link to the blog is Diary of a Fly Fisherman. The descriptions for the areas can be accessed through the Watershed Descriptions section link. Once there you will find links to detailed descriptions for each of the areas featured with up-to-date stream flows, current area weather reports and fishing tips. There are also recommend fly patterns that have worked for me over the years for the featured watersheds on this site. The recommended fly patterns are linked from the individual watershed description pages. General fishing conditions and fishing reports are also accessed from the menu above under Links.
